What Are Microsuction and Irrigation?

Microsuction and irrigation are the two safe, gentle methods used today for professional ear wax removal. Both are recommended by ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialists and widely used in NHS and private clinics. We assess your ears at the appointment and use whichever method is most suitable for you on the day.

Microsuction uses a small suction device to carefully draw wax out of the ear canal. It is a dry procedure, so there is no risk of water being forced deeper into the ear, and no mess. The clinician has a clear view of the ear canal throughout, which makes it precise and safe.

Microsuction may not always be appropriate where impacted ear wax is situated in close proximity to the eardrum. In these circumstances, irrigation may be selected as the most safe and suitable method of removal.

Ear irrigation is a common procedure used to remove excess or impacted ear wax from the ear canal by gently flushing the ear with warm water. The process helps soften and dislodge the wax, allowing it to be safely removed from the ear canal.

Prior to irrigation, the ear is usually assessed to ensure the procedure is safe and appropriate. During treatment, water is introduced into the ear canal at a controlled pressure to avoid discomfort and protect the eardrum. Once the ear wax has been cleared, the ear is carefully checked to confirm the canal is clear and healthy.

Ear irrigation is often recommended when ear wax is too soft, deep, or positioned too close to the eardrum for microsuction to be safely or effectively performed.

Together, microsuction and irrigation are suitable for almost everyone. Emma will assess your ears and recommend the most appropriate method on the day.
